I have been looking forward to photographing baby Samantha for months! Her mom contacted me to book her session right around her twentieth week of pregnancy when she found out she was expecting a baby girl. She and her husband live a few hours from Tallahassee, but they drove to the studio when Samantha was just one week old for her session. I’m always so amazed/honored/excited when clients love my work enough to drive several hours to have me photograph their baby. Samantha is their first baby, but she’s not the first baby from their family I’ve gotten to photograph. I also took her cousin Lila’s newborn photos a couple of years ago, and have gotten to photograph their family several times since then. The entire group is so much fun and this session was no exception. I had a great time with Samantha and her parents taking her newborn portraits. She was way more interested in eating and looking around and checking everything out than she was in sleeping, but we finally got her to settle down and it was worth the wait. Once she fell asleep, we were able to get all of her images in less than 30 minutes. She was so good for us, and slept right through all kinds of pose and setup changes.
Samantha’s parents are big Alabama football fans, so they brought a special blanket and stuffed elephant to use. Samantha is clearly going to be an Alabama fan, too — she snuggled right up to the elephant and was just as content as she could be.
This prop setup was a first for me, but I love the way it turned out! Samantha’s mom brought in a belly cast she had made of her pregnant belly before Samantha was born, and asked if we could use it for her session. To be honest, I wasn’t sure exactly how we were going to use it, but we played around with a few ideas and these turned out to be some of my favorite images from the whole session.
