Thank you for choosing Beth Johnson Photography to capture these special memories for your family! Preparing for your maternity session can seem overwhelming, but I’m here to help! I love to guide my clients through the process of choosing the perfect location and helping decide which outfits will suit you best.
What to Wear
- I’ve got you covered! My maternity client closet includes gowns, bodysuits, and even yards of fabric for draping.
- Want to buy something of your own for the session? Here are some recommendations!
- I do not purchase dresses for the client closet upon request, but if you are wanting something specific and it’s an item I’d like to add to my client closet, you may purchase it and then trade it in after your session for credit towards your images. (This option requires approval in advance.)
Want to include your significant other or older siblings in the session? They are always welcome! Wardrobe suggestions for the rest of the family include neutral colors, avoiding big designs and patterns. Dark jeans or khakis work great for men and boys, while dresses and tutu skirts can look adorable on little girls.
What to Bring
- A well fitting strapless bra in a tone that will blend well with your attire. Nude works for lighter skin colors and brown or black are better for darker skin colors.
- Undies that are minimal — g-strings or thongs may not be your comfy every day choice but they will look better under gowns than a boyshorts style which will show lines. A lot of moms actually go without undies during the session to avoid showing lines. Whichever option you are more comfortable with is fine.
- If you are wearing your own outfit, try it on at home and look in the mirror at all angles to make sure the undergarments you choose aren’t visibly distracting.
Before Your Session
- If you are able to, pamper yourself! Have your hair and makeup done. Get a manicure and pedicure. When you feel great and love the way you look, your confidence will add even more beauty to your photos.
- If you choose to do your own makeup, that’s fine too! I recommend a matte finish, with slightly more blush and lip color than you would normally apply.
- Your hands will be shown in a lot of images (and often your feet too, especially for barefoot studio images.) If you don’t want to get a manicure and pedicure before hand, please make sure to either apply fresh polish or remove all polish so you don’t have chipped polish in your photos.
- Apply lotion before your session so your skin is glowy and not dry. 1-2 hours before the session is recommended to avoid shine and sticky clothes. At this time, you will also want to remove any tight fitting clothing or accessories that may leave marks on your skin (socks, a tight fitting watch, etc.)
